Garden Views
A painting Exhibition by Zenobia Southcombe
I am a visual artist working in painting, drawing, and photography. I find a sense of peace in te taiao – the natural world – and my work explores the beauty, wonder, and interconnectedness of nature. Being in my garden is a joyful experience, and I love seeing how it changes through different seasons and in different lights.
I use my garden – past, present, and imagined future – as inspiration for my painting, bringing out elements of colour and pattern that capture my attention. While working in the garden I take photographs of pleasing compositions or interesting colour combinations to paint from. I also enjoy painting plein air, and often bring in elements from my imagination.
My work has been exhibited widely, including South Canterbury Museum, Hope and Sons Art Awards, Art Attic Gallery, Dunedin Airport, Dunedin Botanic Gardens, and Auckland Festival of Photography.
Current projects include an illustrated memoir exploring the interconnectedness of nature, art, and the self. I will also be developing my floral still life photography series Wilted through an artist residency at Photosynthesis, Ōtautahi/Christchurch, in 2027.
